Each year the best restaurants in Leeds compete for the prestigious Oliver Awards which honours the best restaurants within the region. The Yorkshire Evening Post started the competition six years ago and now the award is one of the most sought after accolades in the Leeds dining scene. Hundreds of eateries are expected to enter with the judge’s shortlist being announced in the new year. The awards are topped off with a black tie event at The Centenary Pavilion, Elland Road Stadium in March. Earlier this year some 400 people attended the 2013 final and the 2014 final is expected to be an even bigger event.

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s editorial director, Jeremy Clifford says believes the award is important:

“The Oliver Awards play an ever-increasing role in recognising the outstanding venues we have for eating and drinking around Leeds.

“Despite the challenging financial climate, our restaurants, cafes and bars continue to add to this region’s vitality and success.”

The award isn’t just the haunt of upmarket, fine cuine restaurants either. All great places to eat in Leeds are urged to enter, accolades such as best newcomer, best cafe/bar and best lunch to be won ensure that there’s room for everyone but the most coveted title is that of best overall. The best overall is where the heavyweights of Leeds dining trade blows, last years winner was the nationally acclaimed, father and son run restaurant, Anthony’s.

Laynes Espresso won the best cafe/bar award. The cafe impressed judges with it’s laid back, warm atmosphere and brilliant coffee (some say one of the best you’ll find in Britain). It comes as no surprise then that Laynes is fast finding itself with the reputation of a great little cafe to pop into. The Yum Yum Deli took the best lunch award, though not the largest of venues, the judges enjoyed the cite-centre eatery’s great sandwiches and hot food – the reasonable prices were a helping hand in clinching the award too.

So the next time you’re unsure of where to eat in Leeds, check out what the Oliver Awards have to say – whether it’s popping out for lunch or sampling fine dining there are some fantastic spots in Leeds, as evidenced by the Oliver Awards. The next place you have a nice bite to eat could be the next award winner!
