Visit Yorkshire we’re officially one of the best spots around
Where are you thinking of going on holiday this year? The Carribean? America? Or somewhere closer to home like Spain? Well travel aficionados and travel guide publishers Lonely Planet think you could do a lot worse than staying even closer to home and visiting Yorkshire, as they rated it the third best destination in the world, helped in no small part by our ’rugged moorlands, heritage homes and cosy pubs’. This comes just after Yorkshire won the World Travel Award for being the best destination in Europe, fending off competition from heavyweights such as, Paris, Madrid and London. It’s no wonder that the Tour de France chose Leeds as the city to stage the grand depart, Yorkshire seems to have it all – but we already knew that!
“The best of all the English counties”
The travel guide publishers mentioned that the success of Yorkshire athletes including Jessica Ennis and Nicola Adams in the 2012 Games boosted our county’s reputation on a global scale. The York Minster cathedral not only helped Yorkshire come third in Lonely Planet’s rankings but also found itself in the top ten ‘sights to make you feel small’ list.
The travel experts believe following our bronze medal placing we could be in for a big influx of tourism:
“It could be that there is something special going on that year, that there’s been a recent development and a lot of buzz about the place, or that we think it’s up-and-coming and suggest travelers visit before the crowds do.
“Their county is better than – and really the best of – all the English counties.”
Great for tourism
The tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire say that our 216 million visits each year brings in a whopping £7bn, both these figures look like they could be on the rise following these accolades. The chief executive of the tourism agency, Gary Verity is delighted by the our county’s recent success:
“We know how amazing and unique our county is,
“It’s fantastic to see Yorkshire taking it’s place as one of the top holiday destinations,
“This is massive for Yorkshire and our thousands of amazing tourism businesses, destinations and events.”
Mr Verity also mentioned that Welcome to Yorkshire had worked extremely hard to put Yorkshire on the map as a tourist destination.
Where do you think the best place(s) to visit in Yorkshire are, what advice would you give to somebody who’s never been to God’s own county?
